This is the second in the Lake Manawa Summer Series. This is a stand alone book and does not have to be read with the previous one.
Lorna Seilstad has yet again created lively, believable characters and a story line that keeps your attention, and keeps you hoping for a home run.
Poor, ungraceful Emily Graham can't seem to walk without tripping. This very characteristic causes her to collide into the life of her brother's old school mate Carter Stockton. Both are looking to pursue their own dreams and trying to find their fit in the world.
Outspoken Emily is fighting for women's rights and struggling to silence God's determined voice in her life. She has purposed that no man is worth sacrificing her dreams for. She is determined that she will follow the women's suffrage movement all the way to a national leadership position.
Carter Stockton is spending the summer playing ball and preparing to settle into the suffocating business world of his father and older brother. However, with his collision with Emily his world is rocked. He can't seem to get her off his mind.
I appreciate the descriptions of how Carter continually asks for God's direction. This is in contrast to Emily who is desperately trying to do things on her own justifying each choice she makes.
These two are a match made for each other from the very start. However, neither of them wants to admit it. Things cause them to come together, then other events drive them apart. In the end the question that must be asked is if they are willing to surrender their own will in order to follow God's plan for their lives.

Fully Engaged, How to Do less & BE more, John Busacker

In today's high speed society of doing more and getting more this book calls for some self examination of what drives us. If you feel that life is speeding by, filled with things and action - yet at night you feel unfulfilled and longing for meaning this book is the one to read.
In his book Busacker explores how we can do less in life and be more - an oxymoron in the truest since. For we are taught from birth to have a desire for more, more, more. Somehow we become engaged in a race for more things, more activities, more work, more service and yet we end the day feeling that all is lost - nothing has meaning. Though we have achieved the next promotion or pay raise, though we have acquired the cars and the house, though we serve on every committee at church we still feel driven to do more in order to find the feeling of contentment we truly long for - that feeling of having achieved.
Busacker begins the book with a thought-provoking statement: " Life worth is the investment you make into and the return you receive". This is stated after the acknowledgement that most of us live by the net worth of ourselves as the standard of achievement rather than life worth. This seems simple enough but really is quite a radical thought in today's society. The simplicity is shockingly profound - we are worth what we invest (emotionally and spiritually) in life not what we gain in materials. Our worth is in God and in living out God's will in an active, totally sold out way!
In addressing how BE more by Doing Less Busacker explores 3 major themes:
1. Awareness: living life with purpose. Knowing your worth, sharing your story, and doing what matters.
2. Alignment: How does what you have and what you do match with what you want.
I especially like this section as it calls us to be actively, totally involved in all parts of our life - having a passion to enjoy every moment and make in worthwhile.
3. Action: How do you move forward.
The over all theme is to live life with a directed purpose - to get the most out of every moment and make every moment count.
I recently read on a friends Facebook wall the following statement, "What good is it to own my own business and get everything I've ever wanted when I'm never home to enjoy any of it - or too tired when I am home".
The comments following his were a sad statement of striving for net worth instead of life worth: "One day you'll enjoy all of it", "It will be worth it when you retire", "Hard work is a great thing - you've never shied away from a challenge".
As you see the drive is more, more, more. Yet my friend made a profoundly simple statement - What good is it when I'm never home to enjoy it?
When I read this book I immediately thought of him - net worth without life worth is really worthless. He has more and does more - but in the end actually has less because he can't be fully and purposefully engaged in making the most of his life.

Pitch Black, Melody Carlson
Morgan's life has always seemed tough but in one week it seems to spin utterly out of control and a black cloud of thickening despair settles over her. With her parents divorce everything seemed to spiral into a darkening abyss. Her older brother became involved in the drug scene so much that she installed a dead-bolt on her door. Then to make matters worse her 40 something mom starts to dress like a teen and dates a younger man.
With the announcement of their marriage Morgan could not imagine that her life could get much more chaotic. In fact by now she had formed a firm opinion that being in youth group and knowing God never helped her. The more her life shatters around her the more that opinion solidifies itself in her heart.
However, little did Morgan know that morning she woke up for school that this would be the pivotal week of her life. That in this week Morgan would discover some soul-shattering truths about herself, God and life in general.
When her best friend commits suicide Morgan must decide if life is bearable, if God is worth counting on. While learning more about herself and exploring the depths of the darkness of Satan's pull and evils despair she also learns more about the one true God. Searching for answers everywhere she trudges through the weekend, discovering bit by bit the reasons that her friend committed suicide. And as if things were not already overwhelming Morgan feels absolutely suffocated by a sense of guilt for not being able to prevent the tragedy.
This novel is true to life and a little gritty. However, each of us needs to be totally honest with ourselves - as teens we all felt over whelmed at times. And if we were to be absolutely honest with ourselves (even if we never admit it out loud) some of us have questioned just like Morgan early in faith if knowing God has really helped to bring a since of order in our lives (after all there is a certain security in the midst of storms that is only developed through the storms and as we mature spiritually).
In today's increasingly evil and oppressive society teens are faced with a myriad of issues. Sometimes as parents we don't like to admit that they too may face the issue of suicide. Either through a friend or as a personal contemplation - the question to be answered: Is it worth it? In this book Melody Carlson explores just this - with a fresh look at scripture. I appreciate the true to life aspects of this book and am sure that it will guide more and more teens out of the bondage's of suicidal thought into the realm of victorious living through Jesus Christ.
Though it explores the darkest depths of despair it also illuminates the greatest heights of faith. Teaching a great lesson that suicide is never God's plan - and that if resorted to you will never see the light dispel the darkness, you will never see the Son break through the clouds of your despair, you will never see God work something beautiful out of the tattered and torn life you currently live. And most of all you will never experience the amazing power of God when he takes something shattered and redeems it to something more extraordinary.

A Killer Among Us, Lynette Eason
A top notch hostage negotiator with secret hurts, Kit Kenyon is a determined and driven individual with a heart to help others. Soft spoken, kind-hearted Noah Lambert is out to change the world one person at a time while working as a detective. As new partners they barely have time to get to know one another before a gruesome crime is committed requiring their attention.
This turns out to be more than a random murder when more law students are found murdered and mutilated. In the heat of the search Kit and Noah are target by the killer. Spending every waking hour working on this case Kit and Noah soon find that there is more to their relationship than that of just partners. Secretly Noah is praying for Kit's heart to be changed by God because he cares for her. All the while Kit is trying to hang on to the anger against her adoptive mother so that she does not feel guilty about starting a relationship with her two sisters and birth parents.
As they uncover new evidence and more bodies turn up they find themselves in a web of danger. Just as they think they have it all figured out they find something new that just doesn't quite fit.
Honestly - I was so tempted to turn to the last page and see who the killer really was. There were so many twists and turns that I did not fit the pieces together until close to the end.
This is an excellent book.

The Christian Life, Jim Burns
Who Is God? Does He care about me? Does He care about what I do with my life?
These are the questions that this study addresses. In twelve lessons youth are invited to find answers to the questions that challenge their faith and define their walk. The book is divided into 3 sections: God's love, Setting a strong foundation, and God's will. Each of these 3 sections are divided into 4 lessons that address different aspects of the theme.
Student handouts are available online, making it so easy to print just the right amount and use only what you need or want. I especially like the sections of each lesson labeled "dig". In this part the students are given questions to answer - these require thought and have no right/wrong answer but are more geared to getting the children to think about what they have learned and what it means to them.
The entire Uncommon youth series is excellent - this one is no less.

Resisting Temptation, Jim Burns
This bible study is part of the Uncommon series - and you just can't go wrong with these!
Jim Burns has done it again - tackled a sensitive and important subject with tact and grace!
In this sex-saturated, pornographic society teens face temptation on every side. From the Internet, cell phones, satellite TV, and raunchy movies (obviously rated incorrectly) teens are bombarded with charged images, veiled comments, innuendos, and obscene lifestyles. They have ready access to drugs, alcohol, pornographic material (in the form of movies, sexting, television and printed material), alternative lifestyles (once a hidden thing now openly and even proudly spoken of and practiced). With all this many teens find it almost impossible to stay on the straight path. In fact they struggle just to fit in and get by.
In this bible study teens are given biblical standards and practical ways to follow them. This study will cause teens to look closely at these subjects in light of scripture and will give them the courage, power, and ability to stand against the false promises of the Liar of this world.
Empower your teen to success in the area of resisting temptation. Give them the biblical tools needed for the battle Field they are in - they are after all on the front lines! We would shudder at the thought of sending our young men off to battle with out adequate training - and we would not dare to send untrained military forces into the trenches of war or across the enemy lines. Yet many teens enter their teen years untrained, and ill-equipped for the battle that they face. They are in the enemy's territory - on the front lines, in the very trenches of the battle for their soul and their future.
I encourage parents to work through this with their children. It is also excellent for youth groups.

The Measure of a Young Man, Gene Getz, & Kenton Getz
This is such a touching book! Written by Gene Getz originally as a series of letters to his son then in Junior High this book explores the principles of 1 Timothy 4:12. After becoming a husband and father himself Kenton Getz has teamed up with his father to write this book based on those letters so that every one could benefit from the wisdom of a father to a son.
As I began reading this I could not help but think of David as he prayed for Solomon and as he laid out for Solomon biblical principles to live by. This is just that. A road map for young men to study and learn from.
Within the pages are 7 principles that have several sub topics that expound on the main principle. This would be great for a father to work through with the son. In fact to take such an approach would make this book and the things addressed more important to your son.
This is set up in a bible study format which makes it easy to break down into different sessions to work on. Also there are sections called "Special Assignment" and "Personal Application". After all the best truths are those that one knows how to use and feels are personally applicable to their life.
This is a must read for teen boys (even preteens) to offer hope, encouragement and a little direction in this tumultuous time.

Before You Live Together, David Gudgel
In toady's society of "Casual sex", "trying on someone for size" (i.e. living together), and disposable marriage this book is great! I actually wanted to review this so that I could share it with people I know and teens/young adults. Today's society has set a new standard of relationships and in the process they have devalued the very sacred union of marriage and set people up for spiritual and emotional bondage caused by sexual sin. In secular research alone it is found that many people with multiple partners have varied issues with health, self-esteem, and settling for long term relationships.
At first glance at the title I was a little taken back - I guess it is because living together is so common place and socially accepted: My first thoughts were that this would end up giving people a chance to justify this decision.
However, quite the opposite is true. Without being judgmental or overly "religious" or pushy this book does a great job of dispelling the lies of the enemy that have taken over popular though on the subject. It would be a good book for Christians as well as non-Christians because it is so simply to the point.
This is not a book that crams religious or faith values down a persons throat but rather objectively shows the truth found in scripture. The author also shows secular research (or "evidence") that corroborates the scriptures.
I will be recommending this book to anyone I know that is considering the decision to live with someone.

Winning Him Without Words, Lynn Donavan, and Dineen Miller
"Un-equally yoked" - what does this mean anyway? A terma widely used within the church but I don't think totally explained.
In this book the authors address this very thing: A marriage that has one person without faith convictions and one that has these convictions.
For the spouse who has come to the saving knowledge of Christ after marriage or the one who has grown spiritually since the marriage this book offers insight and encouragement.
The candid and open writing makes this book an easy read. Within the pages a person can find encouragement to continue doing what the bible has instructed us to do - win our spouse by our actions. Through practical applications and lots of scripture the reader is given new tools to use.
I was very excited as a Pastor's wife and Women's Ministry Leader to get this book. I can't wait to pass it on to ladies in my church and in our community. I think that God will move in mighty ways as more wives read this material and study more deeply the scriptures. This book is not a fix all from man's perspective but rather depends fully upon the scriptures.

Project Dad, Todd Cartmell
Project Dad is a humorous and practical guide book written by a dad to other dads. Todd Cartmell’s warm and engaging style will have fathers laughing from the first few pages, and gives doable hands-on advice for becoming a better dad. This book will make an excellent Father’s Day gift!
This is a humorous yet practical book filled with great insight from Todd Cartmell!
Each chapter ends with a part called Key Points - an overview of what was learned, and Getting to Work - ways to put the information into use.
The idea is that as a father "you are to become a fisher of the great things in your children.." and "if you are to become a fisher of great things in your children you have to be looking for great things in your children" (p.42). How true this is! I see this very thing modeled in my husband - and as I read this book I had to smile. He is forever looking for ways to encourage our four children, picking up all the little things that I sometimes overlook: like using good manners, picking up something with out being told, or kind actions toward others. He is also always pointing out the talents our children have and encouraging them in their uniqueness. So, as I read this I was glad to see that such things were being written about - and practical examples being given. Cartmell is not giving a point by point plan to follow, but rather encouraging Dads to step up to the plate and be real.
I also liked the part that pointed out to Fathers the impact of their words. Sometimes that deep voice is so scary. Cartmell simply states it this way; "Because your a father, your words have the power of dynamite.." (WOW!!! Have you thought of that?!),"...From the day your children are born they indistinctly trust your love and rely on your wisdom./...what you say must simply be true.../especially when its about them." Such simple wisdom but so often overlooked! Cartmell does a fantastic job of bringing these simple, often overlook truths to the light.
Its not all the fishing trips, or hunting, or the baseball/football games - it's the relationship that matters.
Finally I liked Cartmell's statement of what a great dad is "A great dad will remind his children of the greatness that God has placed inside of them and will profoundly impact their tomorrows through the power of their words today." (p.72)
Humorous and easy to read - I loved this book. Truly the perfect Father's Day gift. Instead of pointing out inadequacies or giving a check list to follow this book encourages Dads to embrace their very special very important position that God has entrusted them to.
My husband is the Project Dad complete - this book encouraged me and well as him. For Dad's that are discouraged or feel that they are missing the mark this book will lift their spirits and give them great ideas.

A Heart Divided, Kathleen Morgan
The saga of the Caldwell's and Wainwrights unfolds against the backdrop of the beautiful Rocky Mountains in 1878. A feud that spans over 20 years threatens to destroy the future.
Jacob Caldwell and Edmund Wainwright are both driven and controlled by a deep, dark hatred of each other. Each one blaming the other for there mistakes and hardships. Both bound tightly by ineffectiveness and blind to the destruction they have left in their wake.
Born on the night that his older brother was shot and his mother died Cord Wainwright has built walls around his heart to protect himself from further hurt. The only daughter of Jacob she is bound by her family through a promise she made her dying mother and her own loyalty to her father. In constant turmoil about the life her father has forced them to live, Sara is constantly on guard for attack.
Against her better judgment Sara takes part in a robbery. Pressured by her father, she is sent to distract the ranch hand while her brothers and father rob the Wainwright home. Little did she know that the man she was to distract was Cord Wainwright. Little did either on know that this would change the course of their life forever. This one act would set in motion things that would bring the feud to a boiling point.
These two are set on a path that could easily bring more destruction or could lead to the healing of both families. The book is filled with twists and turns and keeps the reader constantly guessing and hoping for a good outcome. Kathleen Morgan does an excellent job of creating characters that are filled with depth and emotion. One can not help but be drawn into the story - to the point of having great empathy for the different characters and their struggles.
I especially loved Nick - with his gentle and kind spirit his words are filled with wisdom. Always looking for the good and seeking reconciliation he guides the others on this journey that will change all things.
An amazing read.

Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus, Ann Spangler
I am fast becoming an Ann Spangler fan! After reading two of her other books I was anxious to receive this one for review.
If you have ever wondered if you are missing something deeper in the stories of the gospels this is the book for you. In it the authors enlighten the reader on the customs and life of biblical times as well as rabbinical teachings. The language spoken was much deeper and richer than what can be conveyed in modern translations. Things that we think are vague examples those of that time could relate to on a deep and personal lever.
Discover the depth and richness of the gospels and appreciated the far-reaching, life changing words of Christ all the more. In these pages you will discover a well of knowledge and you will close it with clearer sight and deeper understanding of the precious living word of God.

Victory over Darkness, (Book and Study Guide) Neil T. Anderson
Plagued by doubt, burdened by fear, held captive by worry, trudging in the darkness of depression, shackled by the shame of the past, uncertain of your true identity? Are you searching for the confirmation of who you are - wondering what it is that defines you?
Discover who you are in Christ - open the pages of this book, and study the work book. This darkness and doubt that presses on the human race can be brushed away. Christ has called each of us to a life of victory free of the burdens of the past, courageous in the battle field for our souls, strong against the forces of evil. In this book the reader is taught to find their identity in Christ. Anderson explores what God truly thinks about each of us. He uses the scripture to shed light on the dark places of bondage in the readers life and challenges readers to confront the lies of the enemy - to no longer be defined by the lies but to embrace their identity in Christ. He further instructs readers on how to use scripture to form a firm foundation on which to build and renew their lives - leading to ultimate victory over the enemy.

The Christian Life, Jim Burns
Looking for a contemporary bible study that explores what it means to be a Christian? Wanting to help your youth group or your own child explore who God really is and what He really thinks about them?
Look no further! This book fits the bill. I am a huge fan of Jim Burns' material and have found this one to be as excellent as all his other material.
As usual Burns' addresses the very things teens wonder about in a practical, matter of fact way that makes teens stop and take note. Teens want to know what should matter the most in their lives, they question what their signifigance is in the big sceme of things, they wander about God and what He thinks about them (does He even care about what is going on in their lives, does He really love them, does He listen and understand them?). In this study Burns' gives you the very tools you need to answer these faith altering questions. In this study teens will begin to fortify their foundation in Christ, or will begin to build a new foundation.

The Language of Sex Study Guide, Dr. Gary Smalley and Ted Cunningham
A must have if you have already purchased the book. This study guide is an opportunity for couples to work through the ingredients of an intimate marriage.
The Language of Sex by Gary Smalley and Ted Cunningham
The main point is the development of communication, trust, and security in your marriage relationship. I found through reading it that I became convicted of areas in my marriage relationship and parent to child relationships that needed work. It calls you to do much self evaluation and prayer. As I read I was surprised out how this book for marriage held so many truths that were applicable across the table to all relationships in our lives. I began to realize the impact of our childhood relationships with parents on our future relationship with our spouse. This caused me to immediately enter into prayer about what messages about love, life, self-image, security, true intimacy and , yes even sex and body image I was sending to my four young children. It has always been my prayer that my marriage be reflection of God in every aspect and that my children grow to be Godly spouses and to marry Godly mates. This book caused me to take a deep look at my closest relationships and evaluate whether or not I had truly allowed the God of Love and security to have complete control of these relationships. I wish I had read this book earlier on in my marriage. Although I am blessed beyond measure with a Godly husband I realize that we are ALL a work in progress and there is always room for improvement. I better understand the areas I need to look at and address. This book would be helpful to the Pastor who is counseling engaged couples, to the couple that is in engaged, to the newly-wed and that married couple alike. The candid self-disclosure of both authors and the use of God’s living word (and prayer on your part) make this book great. I applaud both authors for being genuine in their disclosures and for seeking to rightly divide the Word of God. I highly recommend this book to those interested in a better relationship all around with their spouse.

From mason to Minister, Neil Cullan McKinlay
Written by a once high level mason this book chronicles his journey to discover the Living God. The hot and often debated topic of whether the Masonic Lodges are a cult or not is openly discussed in light of the scriptures. I was very interested in this book as I have a Great Grandfather that was a high level Mason and Shriner. On his death bed he accepted Christ and renounced the Lodges.
I found this book to be excellent as a resource for Pastors and others to show those wondering about the workings and truth of the Lodges. In these pages the reader follows the journey of Neil Cullan McKinlay as he wades the vague fog of the Lodges into the true and redeeming light of true Christianity.
McKinlay does a sound job at showing in an unbiased way the difference between what the Lodge proclaims and what it actually practice and how these very things contradict the teaching of the bible.
An intriguing journey into the shadowy secrets of the Lodges this book guides readers through the secret rites and teachings of a closed cult. I found it rather ironic that the bible presented to McKinlay upon his entrance into the Lodges was the very book that led to his acceptence of Christ.
A great easy read. Very informative and very biblically sound. If you are interested in understanding just how far off this lodge is from true christianity this book will clearly answer your questions.

Every Single Woman's Battle, Shannon Ethridge
This is the workbook that is meant to be read with the book Every Woman's Battle. I found it to be an excellent workbook when used with the book. As a stand alone study it encourages single women to pursue a virtous life in thought and deed - recognizing the pull of sexual compramise. The one thing I liked was the fact that this explored the issue of what sex means to a woman - that it is more than the physical act but is also very emotional. To compramise sexually is to compramise emotionally as well. The ramifications are long-lasting and often times devasting. I especially liked the theme of "guarding one's heart" as this is truly the route that must be taken to maintain sexual integrity in a highly phornographic and sexually charged society where all things go. I highly recommend this for young ladies entering a world outside their parents home. I believe it would be an encouragement to them to gaurd the most precious thing by gaurding their hearts - from which life and death are issued. For it is in this most sacred place that we make all decisions - and what we allow into our hearts will determine our abibility to fully rest in the Savior.
False Witness, Randy Singer
Fast paced and filled with twists and turns this book keeps the reader's attention from page one!
This was my first legal-thriller to read - and I think I am hooked. If Randy Singer writes like this all the time - I want to read all of his books!
Clark Shealy, a bail bondsman, finds himself looking for a criminal in exchange for his wife's life. Up against the Chinese Mafia, The Manchurian Triad, Clark is in a race for his wife's life. During this time he develops a rap sheet a mile long and is pushed to the edge of his honor.
At every turn of the page there is a new twist. For the first time I seriously began to wonder if such things truly occur in the justice system of our country. If it could happen it did in this book - murder, kidnapping, intent to maim, auto theft, double-crossing, set ups and stings, witnesses in the protection program found out - it was all there.
In fact every time I thought I got the plot figured out - I was led down another twisty road that made everything look grey and made me doubt even those I thought were "good guys".
Absolutely worth the read - you will be kept on the edge of your seat the entire time!
Thank you B&B Communications for this review copy.
Singer was moved by the plight of the Dalit children, struggling to throw off the yoke of oppression and
replace it with real freedom and dignity, so he committed to do his part because he believes that "no
child should be untouchable." So he is donating every penny from the sale of False Witness to the Dalit
Freedom Network. His novel will take readers from the streets of Las Vegas to the halls of the American
justice system and the inner sanctum of the growing church in India with all the trademark twists, turns,
and legal intrigue his fans have come to expect.

The Lightkeepers Ball, Colleen Cobble
I had picked this book up several times at the bookstore but had not yet purchased it, so I was glad to get it as a review copy from B&B Communications!
This book is engaging from page one, drawing readers into another world. After the sudden and tragic death of her father and then the mysterious and untimely death of her sister Olivia Stewart vows to find answers. She is being asked to marry the man that was supposed to marry her sister in order to secure her family's social status and bankroll. This journey turns out to be more than she expected. Falling in love with the one man she has vowed never to love and finding an unexpected sibling. The twists and turns are great. The reader is always on edge trying to figure out who the murderer is and hoping that Olivia's secret identity is not blown. I loved this book. Often I found myself holding my breath and then only moments later laughing at the couple that are falling love.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
First Place Winner of 2010 Literary Award, The Adventures of PJ and Split Pea Nothing But the Tooth, Published by Outskirts Press
Reader Views’ expert judges have named S. D. Moore’s new PJ and Split Pea adventure the winner of the 2010 First Place Literary Award for early readers. The second in her popular series, Moore’s newest release takes readers on PJ’s last minute search for a replacement tooth for Picture Day.
March 7, 2011 – Denver, CO, and Anchorage, AK – Veteran children’s author S. D. Moore announced today the release of the second volume of her PJ and Split Pea adventure series, Nothing But the Tooth, published by Outskirts Press. This award winning children’s book continues the rambunctious adventures of PJ and Split Pea, the wisecracking parrot with a British accent, as they look for a tooth to hide PJ’s new dental gap for the upcoming Picture Day.
PJ has already had his quota of embarrassing moments at earlier Picture Days at school. Once, due to a green magic marker somehow having gone wildly out of control, he ended up looking surprisingly similar to a Martian. Another year he arrived a gluey-haired mess for the photographic event.
All is going well for this year’s festivity until PJ wakes up missing a tooth the day before. Determined to solve this new “problem,” he and Split Pea launch off on a quest to buy, beg or borrow a new set of teeth for PJ. What could go wrong?
After being validated by the Reader Views First Place Award, author Moore said, “I cried when I received the notification.”
Hardly surprising. In 1993, after a military tour of duty in the Middle East, Moore had a stroke and lost nearly half the communication sector of her brain. She couldn’t spell simple words like “very” and “the.” Now she’s the winner of this prestigious children’s book award.
“I hope this inspires people to keep fighting to accomplish their dreams. It’s possible,” says Moore.
The Adventures of PJ and Split Pea, Vol. II: Nothing But the Tooth is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.
ISBN: 978-1-4327-1289-1 Format: 8.5 x 8.5 color paperback SRP: $12.95
Available on Kindle $3.79 Genre: Juvenile fiction/action and adventure
About the author:

Another Dawn, Kathryn Cushman
Reading the back of the book does not even hint at the true topic of this book. I found this to be difficult to read as it is a topic that is close to home for myself.
Grace Graham is known for running every time life gets a little difficult. She would rather relocate than face those things that make her uncomfortable. This has caused her to be estranged from her family after her mother's death. After be called out on this by her sister she agrees to come home with her son Dylan to take care of her father following his knee surgery.
Although there are other issues to be dealt with the main is that of vaccinations. Kathryn Cushman has written an excellent book on this very hot and very debatable topic. Grace's choice not to immunize her son leads to devastating consequences when he develops measles and exposes his infant cousin and other children in the church nursery. This sets the scene for a melt-down and the opportunity for Grace to stand firm.
I appreciate the apparent research Kathryn Cushman did in writing this story. During this trial Grace learns about love, courage, forgiveness and what she is truly made of. The story is rich and full of interesting characters.

The Final Summit, Andy Andrews
Andy Andrews does it again! I became and Andy Andrews fan when I read The Heart mender, this book was no less enjoyable. The book chronicles the journey of David Ponder who is sent to gather all the “Travelers” together to answer questions. The book is filled with many twists and turns throughout. As was the case with the last Andrew’s book I read – this one is so difficult to put down. I wanted to know exactly how the entire thing would turn out. However, I do wish that Andrews had pointed more to the personal relationship needed with Jesus Christ in order to enter heaven. There is not really any mention of Christ’s sacrifice for humanity and our dependence on this to have eternal life. Even in this I would recommend this book for an enjoyable read.

Secrets of the Vine for Women, Darlene marie Wilkinson
I have read the Secrets of the Vine book, as well as the children's edition. So when I saw this as a book to review I took the opportunity. I am extremely glad I did. This book is just the right size for a quick read. The author's writing style keeps the book from being overwhelming in theology. Everything is very simple to understand and is uplifting and encouraging. I would highly recommend this book to every woman - we could all use a little encouragement from time to time. I did especially enjoy the illustration of Mary and Martha. Too often we are overwhelmed by what must be done that we do not take care of the most important task at hand - just spending time with Jesus. Our to-do lists often take precedence over our quiet time with the Lord to the point that we begin to neglect it by treating this relationship as just another item on the to-do list.
This books size and price make it an excellent gift or basket filler for ladies in your church. A great read for ALL women.

Isreal Gets A New King, What's in the Bible
If you want to help your children learn more than just bible stories this is the DVD series for you!
With a mix of live action, animation and puppets Phil Vischer has created a new way to teach children all about the bible. I really appreciate the fact that this is more than just bible stories. It is filled with easy to understand definitions, historical information concerning the times, places and customs of the people, and in -depth teaching about the books.
This is the 5th in the What's In the Bible series. It is conveniently seperated into two parts: the first being 1 Samual, the second being 2 Samuel and the first part of 1 Kings.
Micheal introduces this first part by saying that we will learn about the "intangible value of unseen people". The children are taught about Isreal's request for a king to lead them. After annointing a tall and impressive King Saul the Isrealites are pleased with their choice when he takes care of the Philistines. However, from Saul children are taught that "God doesn't want us to be impressive, He wants us to be obedient". This is a lesson all of us need to hear, but it is especially important for children to grab hold of this invaluable truth since the world is always telling our children what they have to do and be in order to be useful or important. In this section children see that obedience to God is what matters and that it is the best thing you can do. In this section children are also introduced to David and the trinity. I am so impressed with the way that the trinity is explained and illustrated in this video!!! Such a complex thing to explain and yet with the use of puppets, and song Phil Vischer slams the definition home. The song is cute and catchy and any child will easily remember it.
The second part is introduced by the Pirate singing "David was a King and he did lots of things...." I just love all the music and funny jokes that are hidden in this. The theology that is taught is biblically sound but is brought down to a child's level in comedy, story and song. These things will not be quickly forgotten. How many children do you know that can explain what the Davidic Covenant was and why it was so important? - - - You will know a lot more after this video is shown around.
This sections chronicles the life of David - and even explores the story of David and Bathsheba. I thought the way this was handled and explained made it very easy for children at any age to understand. The outstanding lesson taught is the correct attitude of repentence (including a very thourogh definition of the word repent); and the difference between God's forgiveness and the consequences of sin. Children learn that although God will forgive them when they repent, they must still face the consequences of this sin. I loved the puppet's comment, "Once again sin messes up a perfectly good story".
This ends with another cute and catchy song about David
"2 Samuel the book that tells
the reign of David the King of Isreal
He had some highs, he had some lows
Read 2 Samuel to learn about those....."
then it concludes - -
"Just like you and I do David messed up
Let's just say he did some pretty bad stuff
But he was really, really sorry for missing the mark
that's why he was called a guy after God's own heart..."
Overall this is an excellent video for children of all ages - even adults will enjoy it.

With a mix of live action, animation and puppets Phil Vischer has created a new way to teach children all about the bible. I really appreciate the fact that this is more than just bible stories. It is filled with easy to understand definitions, historical information concerning the times, places and customs of the people, and in -depth teaching about the books.

The Fitting Room, Kelly Minter

Struggling with self-image? Have you ever wondered what true beauty is? Tired of trying to meet the world's standards of beauty? When you look in the mirror what do you see?
Come learn how God sees you and become the image bearer of the Great Designer. Be clothed in His glory and beauty. Become the woman you have always wanted to be - stunning, beautiful, breath-taking, lovely! Throw out that old wardrobe and exchange it for a heavenly one!
Based on Colossians 2 Kelly Minter encourages readers to clothe themselves in Godly things. Her casual and authentic writing style makes the reader feel as if they are sitting with an old friend. I believe this book would be excellent for a small group bible study. All women struggle with some form of insecurity (though some hid it very well behind a mask of perfection). In the fourteen chapters of this book Kelly addresses the many lies of this world that have convinced us that we must look, dress, and act a certain way to be accepted. Kelly replaces those lies with the Word of God and teaches ladies that we to must clothe ourselves in God's Word.
I highly recommend this book for all women.
