Hermie and Friends, Who's In Charge anyway

Max Lucado does it again. This is a wonderful video any child will love. All four of my children enjoyed this movie about the unique talents of the individual. One of the greatest lies perpetually spoken by the Enemy into the heart of children is that they do not matter. In fact it is a lie that many adults are held in bondage to also. A lie that inhibits spiritual growth, thwarts God’s best laid plans, and causes many Christian believers just to settle for second best instead of God’s best. When Freddie the flea hears Hailey and Bailey ask “What’s so important about a flea” he begins to wonder if he in fact is important in the big picture of God’s greater plan. In this beautifully animated children’s film the lie is replaced by the truth that ALL of God’s creation is created for a purpose and that each individual has talents that are special for a reason. The Lord's Prayer, R.T. Kendall

This is a must have book for any christian. Everyone can benefit from reading and learning about the Lord's model prayer. The true power and richness of this prayer is revealed through the passionate teaching of R.T. Kendall. His heart for the Lord and deep convictions of the power and awesomeness held in this prayer is evident in his writing. Most certainly this book needs to be read more than once in one's christian walk. The thoughtful preperation of this work is deeply appreciated by myself. I highly reccommend this book to anyone seeking a more intimate knowledge of this Jesus we serve. After studying and putting into practice the things laid out in this book one can not help but come face to face with the Saviour of your soul each time, developing a closer more intimate relationship with a God who reached accross time to a sinner. No More Christian Nice Girl, Paul Coughlin & Jennifer D. Degler, PhD

This is a must have for all christian women. I think to some extent each of us battles with being God's good Woman and just the traditional "sugar and spice" nice girl. The title of this book was what caused me to want to read it. I realize that submission is a taboo word in today's culture of "me-first" mentality. I was afraid this book was one that would mislead women to such a mentatlity with the use of watered-down scripture. However, it is just the opposite. The author's seek to empower women in the scripture to lead virtous lives for the glory of God by standing firm in His word. This sometimes means not being the "nice girl", but being instead the woman of God's Grace and Power, by lovingly and firmly defending the ground that God has given you to defend (even when it is just a bean field - this is an old testement reference to one of David's mighty men). I loved the references to women of the bible that where not christian nice girls but were God's good women such as Deborah, Jael, Ruth, and Mary of Bethany. I found the set up of the book very interesting to. The book opens like a novel about Nicole. Thereafter, each chapter is filled with wisdom and insight ending with another insert of the story of Nicole, followed by study questions and further bible readings. It was interesting to see the transformation of Nicole from CNG to God's good woman. Thank you Bethany House for this review copy.

In a Heartbeat, Leigh Anne & Sean Tuohy

This is the personal story of the Touhy family that inspired the book and movie The Blind Side. It was extremely interesting to get to know the people behind this story. I think that there is a misperception of them in that it is easy to write off their act of goodwill as simply because of their financial resources. I challenge Christians not to use their lack of finances as an excuse to act charitably to those around them. I would also like to interject that it is never easy nor comfortable (no matter your financial status)to open your home to those in need. Furthermore, From personal experience, God always provides the means and way to accomplish the tasks he has set us to. I do not believe that the Tuohy's did what they did seeking any recognition - I believe they saw a need and had the means to meet that need and did just that. Had Micheal Oher not made the NFL no one would have heard or cared about this story - in fact similar stories happen all the time. They are, however, especially, inspiring when something "big" (by the world's standards) comes of them. I think it is evident that although God had a plan for the Tuohy's to follow (helping Micheal) the greater plan may have been for Micheal to help the Tuohy's . Good book, good read. Healer, Linda Windsor

Very interesting. This story is based in the time of Arthur and merlins. This is not my usual area a fictional reading, but I enjoyed it none-the-less. It is very obvious that the author did a lot of research and spent much time tying truth and myth and weaving in the biblical history of this time. It reminds me of books such as the Chronicles of Narnia and others like it. I especially enjoyed the authors personal testimony of the redemption of her daughter from wicca through the research of this book. How interesting that ancient history helped to relate the truth of the bible to her daughter and the lies of the Evil One. Good book for those who enjoy tales of Arthur and magic and love and the war between good and evil. Thank you B&B Communications for the review copy.

The Six Pillars of Biblical Power, John Rankin

Excellent book of apologetics! If you can grasp these six areas of God's character you can defend the faith any day on any front. I found the author to be a bit wordy at times, the book could have been much shorter. However, I enjoyed it very much. He was very thorough about teaching each point so that all people, at any spiritual maturity, could glean something. Worth reading more than once for sure. I even went back over certain pages to make sure I hadn't missed anything. One thing I really like a lot was the way Mr Rankin would define words by their root origins in Latin, Hebrew, and Greek. This was often surprising as sometimes the actual meanings did not line up with the way we use the word in modern day English. This clarified much scripture. Would be an excellent homeschoolers resource for the story-line of the bible, history, math and science. I loved his comparison of music, math, and the poetry of the bible: WONDERFUL! All of his teaching just shows the majesty of our Creator and how all things tie together in such a way that His existence is simply undeniable.

Rediscovering Holiness, JI Packer

Very good and thoughtful book. My heart almost broke as I came to the full realization of the truth this author was bringing to light: Modern Christians are losing part of our heritage. The heritage of holiness. God charged his people to pass along a heritage deeply steeped in the christian faith. Passing from one generation to the next in words and deed the goodness and character of the God of Creation. Yet somewhere along the line gentile christian have left this off - we can not pass along a heritage we do not ourselves practice. If we do not as individuals strive for holiness in our lives how can we live it out in our families and pass it a long to our children. Have we become so prideful and negligent that we are satisfied just in the sacrifice of Christ and the redemption of our soul that we do not pursue to deepen our spiritual walk by pursuing a life of holiness that befits our relationship with the God of all Creation? Highly reccomended.

Faith Dare, Debbie Alsdorf

Faith Dare, Debbie Alsdorf
An excellent resource for women’s ministry groups! This would be a great small group bible or personal bible study. I loved all the scripture commentary. So many ladies bible studies are filled with fluff and weak on the word. This one is certainly not. This is set up as a forty day study. However I found that many of these could very easily be stretched through the entire week – if you were committed to pray each day over the same lesson and meditate on it – allowing it to penetrate your heart and life. There is plenty of space for journaling ones thoughts. To make journaling easier there are guided questions. Again this would be great for a small group – as it would add accountability to the dare.

God Knows My Name, Beth Redman

Oh, my! This is a powerfully poignant book and study. Be prepared to go on a journey of a life-time! Beth lays open her heart and the rawness of the wounds of the lies of the enemy. Through her personal testimony Beth takes readers down the road of healing she experienced by laying out the scripture revealed to her on this journey. I do not believe that there is a woman that could not benefit from the reading of this book. We have all been wounded deeply by the enemy and often the deepest and hardest to heal wounds are inflicted by those closest to us – those most familiar with our weaknesses and able to penetrate our toughest defenses. Through scripture she reminds us that we are each known by name by the creator of the universe – created for a divine purpose and plan. By replacing lies with truth Beth shows readers how to live a life victorious in Christ. Have a box of Kleenex ready, be prepared to be broken, poured out, and then made more beautiful through the love of Christ. I believe many lives will be changed because of the obedience of Beth Redman to share an intimate and personal testimony of her life. My prayers are with her as I am sure the enemy does not like the fact that the Living Word of God has been so plainly spoken in such a manner as this. I would love to put this book in the hand of every woman in our congregation.

To those Who Suffer, Sean Nolan

This book is a great book for those that are walking in a valley of suffering, be it physical or emotional. By drawing heavily on the example of Job Nolan explores the blessings of suffering. Although God may not remove our suffering Nolan points out that God still has a plan for us and that in the end our blessings will be great. Paul suffered a thorn in his flesh that he asked to be removed, yet it was not. In the end he tells believers to count it joy and to be content in all things. Job is said to have been blessed more in the end than in the beginning. As Sean Nolan has also been in intense suffering and pain and has questioned God, he leads readers through the scripture God showed him to help him better endure the circumstances of his life. I especially enjoy the teaching that suffering can cause a person to lean more heavily on Christ, developing a more intimate knowledge of the power of Christ and of a life lived in Christ. This is an excellent book for this first time author. Very well written.

Chasing Superwoman, Susan M. Dimickle

Chasing SuperWoman
I will begin by saying I admire any woman that will devote herself to the task at writing a book in the midst of the busy season of motherhood.
That being said, I will also say that I have had this book read for several weeks and have had to do much praying and crucifying of the flesh before setting forth to publish a review.
I would never recommend this book to any woman I know – although I see that it has received many positive reviews. I found the author’s style aggressive and in your face – very much to the confirmation of the negative views of lawyers (she did her profession and God no good in her opening statements). She opens with a statement on page 14 that says the church “community operates under the assumption that the only women attending church are traditional stay-at-home moms who act llike the church lady and belong to the PTA”. In thirteen years of church ministry and as many years in the church I have not found this to be true (in the south, not only just the south but the BIBLE BELT, of the south). In fact I have found that often the stay-at-home mom is often treated with scorn and jealousy of their counterparts. Although I am a stay at home mom I was once a working mom and am keenly aware of the unique burden of these women. However, I wonder if it is considered sometime the unique burden of the stay-at-home mom who ends each day with all her work undone to be redone the next day: plodding through each sunrise to sundown doing tasks over and over with seemingly no end and seldom any recognition. Furthermore, I was deeply put off by the fact that just in the opening chapters it seems that the author is seeking to justify compromise in her Christian walk so as to complete her job where she must often use profanity(page 15). There is in my mind no separation from our lives at home and our lives in this world. We are called to be transformed not conformed, to walk set apart for the work of the Lord, not to do in public one thing and practice at home another, and put on a “church-lady” face and attitude of servitude on church days. Our faith and Christian ethics should dictate our every move, they should permeate our lives. It is said our God is a consuming fire, that he desires ALL our life. The choice remains: “Choose ye this day whom ye will serve/you can not serve to masters for you will love the one and hate the other” (taken from the old and new testements). I have never allowed the drive of success or ambition or the attaining of “power” to dictate my actions in such a way that I could not freely live out a vibrant faith in the work force. My highest goal was and is to be salt and light a reflection of Christ so that my children would see that God matters EVERYWHERE I set my foot, not just at home. That he is more that tradition and religion and a means to heaven – that he is real and living – that He is my God and Lord.
Such books do not promote a general peace and the bringing together of ALL mothers. Believe it or not this can happen. Our women often meet for a “mom” meeting where working and stay-at-home moms come together for prayer and bible study. Although we have unique needs we also have the same and our goal ultimately ought to be the same: Serve God, our Husbands, our Families, Our Church……then our Jobs in Christ for His glory alone.

True Religion, Palmer Chinchen, PhD

It is time to “abandon your small ambitions God is bigger than them” (page 79), what a compelling way to start off this book! I was very impressed with this book and the candor and openness of Palmer Chinchen.
There are stories in this book that broke my heart and tied my stomach in knots, while others inspired me to do greater things in my life. At times I had to put it down for the tears in my eyes and the conviction on my heart. Then there were times that the bile rose in the back of my throat at the description of injustice and the thought that I and my children have things so easy while others suffer under the cross of Christ. I have lost very little in this life of much personal value in my service to the Lord. In fact all my physical needs are more than supplied through His grace and our local church. Sure I have had to draw boundaries with family and suffer some things that have caused me some discomfort, but nothing compared to my brothers and sisters in foreign countries. I must agree with the author that many have developed a callous soul to the hurting and abused of the world. Our world is not only sex-saturated but violence saturated to the point that in America we are not even moved to compassion. When you turn on the t.v. it is there, our children play video games dominated by graphic violent images, our church members attend and watch movies filled with all types of physical, and emotional violence - - to the point that this is almost deemed acceptable or someone else’s problem. I am glad there are those called to remind us in writing of the “places of hell on Earth” and the desperate need to take a piece of heaven to the people in these places. To be the good Samaritan, not afraid to get dirty in the service of the Lord. Palmer states that we need to “ Give your life away, pour it into people,”.
If I could afford to I’d give copies to everyone in our congregation. This is a must have book. I have used it in our ladies meeting and will be using it with our youth group as we learn about sold-out living. We are having our own Bare-foot Wednesday with our youth at the end of July. My four young children have already filled one garbage sack with shoes of all sorts.
My heart is to live an authentic, sold-out, completely surrendered, passionately poured out, blessedly broken, nothing sparing, mountain-moving, water-walking, Jordon-crossing, giant slaying faith that brings glory to God the Father the I AM. This book is further encouragement to do so. It does not matter when we die if any remembers our names, but that they remember a man or woman that lived out their life walking in the love and grace of God.
Thank you B&B Communications for this review copy. Thank you Palmer Chinchen for faith that stirs others to good works.

The Seeker, Ann Gabhart

The Seeker
This book was hard to put down! This is not the typical historical love-story filled with sweep you off your feet, fairy tale love. It is more about a search for meaning beyond the world’s standards. It is about the discovery that one’s parent’s, one’s social status, possessions, house, wealth (or lack there of) are not what define us. It is our faith and our creator that defines us. Charlotte is a spoiled southern belle, the daughter of a senator. She is “mothered” by a kitchen slave named Aunt Trish who reaches across the lines of segregation to lay the biblical foundation that will sustain Charlotte in her darkest hours. As Charlote enters the Shaker Village to find safety and hiding for herself and her personal slave and friend, Mellie, she soon finds herself in a spiritual journey. It is also a journey of discovery – what does she truly believe about God? In the midst of this a love story slowly unfolds in a most unlikely way. I think I enjoyed this book more because it focused less on the consuming emotions of the flesh as the driving force of the relationship and more on the development of love as a relationship, a friendship. Although there was a kiss exchanged it is not the crux of the relationship.
This is a very good, well-written book. I enjoyed it very much.

Reborn to be Wild, Ed Underwood

Reborn to be wild – Ed Underwood
I will admit that being only in my early 30’s I did not know there was a Christian revival movement in the 60’s and 70’s. I only remember being taught about the marches and “bra” burning. When I thought of the 60’s and 70’s images of long-haired, tie-dye clad, peace-sign throwing, free-love screaming, acid-tripping youth comes to mind.
I did, however, enjoy this book!! The term “free-love” will now forever bring an image of the free-love offering of Jesus Christ. This book will most certainly change the way I teach my children about this time span of history. In fact I may even look into leading a youth revival called “free-love”, with a 60’s hippy theme revival style retreat. Maybe this type of abandon in Christ is exactly what we need.
A great book about breaking the strongholds and lies of the enemy to live a life of revival. Our God is a consuming fire this book invites you to walk in the midst of this consuming fire. The personal stories are great and often made me giggle out-loud. I found myself wishing I hadn’t been born in 1978 but instead had been born 15 or 20 years earlier just to be part of this dynamic revival movement. Oh, to be a part of such a dynamic movement – total surrender to Christ, dissolving into Him, excited, on fire, and ready to go forth with the word and work!

Faith Set Free, Will Davis Jr.

Faith Set Free, Will Davis Jr.
A Powerful and wonderful book. I have long believed in praying scripture. This is an easy read. I loved that it challenges the legalism and traditions of man by boldly exposing the truth and power of God’s word. I have seen all too often the Christian being unable to experience the full richness of worship and the abundant blessings and deep intimacy of unhindered prayer because of legalism. This book challenges people to lay it all out before God claiming his promises. He already knows you heart’s desires, he simply desires you to let you see his heart. There is power in the word of God – this book invites you to experience it by developing a relationship with Christ.

This book is not at all what I expected. It is an excellent resource for mothers of teens and for youth ministers. It is not a typical relationship "self-help" book filled with quick-fix remedies or "how-to miracles". What you find in these pages is a fictional story told from a the unique first person perspective and journal entries. The story has a great story-line, but the information that is packed into the story is even more important. The main character tells her story about her personal search of the key to lasting relationships after her parents divorce. She is led on this journey by a a college professor named Glaen. What she discovers is nothing profound or earth-shattering, but is very useful in day to day relationships. In the prolouge the author encourages the reader to read the book first as a fictional piece then to read it a second time for the principles in it. It is set up so that each page only has half a page of printed material in easy to read font so that there is plenty of room to journal, write prayers and discussion topics. I think this would be useful in a small group environment for a youth group or married couples. It was very enjoyable and an easy read. I completed the book after putting my 4 small children to bed in a matter of a few hours. My copy is marked with scripture that came to mind and personal notes. I plan to use it next spring with my older youth. I also plan to purchase an additional copy for my children to read so that we can compare thoughts when they are of the dating age. I have already recommended it to several friends, one of which is currently reading it and the other is waiting for her review copy.
