A life overshadowed with the weight of tragic events, Marianna tries to be the perfect daughter and perfect Amish child. This is an astounding book and offers a new view of the Amish community. Never had I realized the weight of what it must feel like to have to follow such strict rules (the ordnung) or how this would stifle ones spirit. Until reading this book the Amish had always been presented as dealing with tragedy with grace and mercy and love. However, in this story one sees the effects of the law on these people. There is no grace to be found only watchful eyes on every move. The Sommer family leaves their community for the Montana mountains seeking the truth and peace. This is the beginning of a redemption that only the realization of God's grace can bring. For the first time in her life Marianna is faced with decisions that will alter forever the course of her life. She must choose to follow God or to stick to the familiar life of her old Amish community - to embrace a personal relationship with the Creator or continue in the laws of the Amish. Absolutely beautiful! I can not wait for the second book in this series to be released. I want to see how this story continues to unfold!
An added surprise is the recipes in the back of the book. A lover a new recipes - this really appealed to me. My family loved the Amish casserole.

The Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast, Kristen Feola
Kristen Feola shares her testimony in the introduction to her bible study. I really appreciated how she we so candid. I also appreciated the fact that this study begins with an introduction to the different types of fasting. Kristen Feola was very good at applying scripture to her lessons and showing how the biblical examples are applicable to our lives today. I think what makes this book very unique is the fact that over the 21 days of fasting there is a lesson each day. The overall goal is to reach into God's word completely and fully. An added benefit to this book is the more than 100 recipes included and the meal plans for the entire fast. This makes meal preparation easier and with the guided bible study one is drawn closer to the Lord and is less focused on fasting.

West Oversea, Lars Walker
Wow! Loved this. I read this with my son and found it to be very interesting. It follows the same type of story line as C.S. Lewis' fantastical story Voyage of the Dawn Treader. As we read it we were transported back in time to a season of adventure. This is the first book by this author that I have read, but now I am up for reading his other works as well. Much like Lewis one can't read just one and stop. For now we (my son and I) are captivated by the characters and feel as if we know each one. Their adventures, heartaches and struggles became our own as we read this story. What better way to fall in love with history than to read fiction based on historical figures.
I would recommend this for home school families looking for good classical literature. Also for any C.S. Lewis fan this is a great read - you will not be disappointed.

The Grandfathers, DVD

This video is the perfect length to show during a youth gathering or Awana meeting to learn about the life of missionaries. This is the third video in the trilogy - The first two were "Beyond the Gates of Splendor" and "End of the Spear". One of these was a feature film while the other was a documentary style telling of the slaughter of missionaries by the tribe they were sent to minister to. In this film you are introduced to the grandson of one of the original missionaries. What makes this family's story so unique and inspiring is that those remaining went back to minister to the tribe that killed their relatives. Forgiveness and redemption are a major theme in this movie. Through the forgiveness and love and willingness to serve this tribe came to know the saving grace of God. Moreover peace and reconciliation was achieved. I have a lot of respect for these missionaries.

Money and Marriage, Matt Bell
A great resource for newly married and engaged couples. It is vitally important that financial information be exchanged and a financial plan be put in place early in a marriage. This book uses scripture as a basis for planning a solid financial future free of debt. I think it is a comprehensive book filled with good exercises. Some may find the forms and worksheets and questions tedious and time-consuming. However, these very things are excellent building blocks. As a Pastor's wife my husband and I have seen and counseled with couples who failed to do any type of financial planning and seen the devastation and stress it brings to a marriage.

The Invisible World, Anthony Destafano
This is a very interesting and insightful book. Though, I honestly think that those seeking explicit or comprehensive knowledge of the spirit world will find themselves disappointed because Destafano stays close to the scriptures. He offers insight according to the scriptures into the spiritual world. Making it known that though we should not spend all our time foussed on the spiritual world it is essential to acknowledge that it exists beyond our realm of comprehension. I did not care so much for the opening talk of "ghosts" or "spirits" in this context because I do not believe in such myself. Other than this I found nothing especially offensive or otherwise contradictory to the scriptures.

When the Hurt Runs Deep, Kay Arthur
Yet again Kay Arthur opens the Word and applies it for those in the tumultuous dark valleys of life. This book is subtitled "Healing and Hope for Life's Desperate Moments" and that is precisely what it is. Each of us will traverse dark deep valleys in life, we will each face desperate heartbreaking moments when our world is rocked and turned upside down. In these moments the enemy seems to speak the loudest and call out many unfounded lies. Yet in these very moments God is also calling for us to look toward him. These are the moments that define our faith - that test our faith and shape us spiritually. This book is a great book for those walking in these valleys or for those who have experienced a hurt or devastating experience that seems too big to overcome. It is great for those who are on their knees crying out "Why!?".

This book should be in the hand of every person in the military who has children! Absolutely wonderful! This author has addressed the concerns of children in an honest manner in regards to a parent that is away for an extended amount of time. Written for her own granddaughter who's father is in the military this book deals with all the emotions of missing one's parents.

15 Minutes Outside, Rebecca P. Cohen
This is an excellent resource for busy parents or parents looking for something new and different. The author has divided the activities by month and by inside and outside ideas. It would be difficult for someone to pick this book up and not find something that they could do with their kids. I think it is a wonderful edition to our library of idea books. One of my favorite ideas was found in the month of May - it was to find and watch worms. We love doing this! I give my children a hand spade and we see who can find the most worms in the flower bed and then we see who's worm is the longest and who's is the fattest. These ideas are all simple and not cost prohibitive. Every family can find something.

150 Secrets to a Happy Wife, Joe Gumm
This book was great. I laughed out loud as I read it. Joe Gumm is so honest about his experiences in life. His candor and wit was very much appreciated. I think, even in the humor that these things are presented it is a helpful book. Husbands and wives would both benefit from reading it. I think I will make it required reading for my sons when they get older. The things presented are simple, yet they would have a profound effect on relationships if put into place. One of my favorites is Do the Laundry. Gumm explains to the husband that this is one job that is never done for a woman - she picks up everyone's dirty socks, clothes, unders, and washes them, puts them up only to have to pick them up again after they are worn. He suggests that the husband do the laundry correctly for his wife. This is a great read!!! It would make an excellent gift for a newly engaged or married couple.

Love Amid the Ashes, Mesu Andrews
This is the most unique biblical romance I have read! I found myself looking back into the scripture to refresh my memories of the story of Dinah and Job. Never would I have thought to intertwine these two stories into one. However, Mesu Andrews has done an excellent job at just that. Immediately ones heart is drawn toward Dinah. In my years of reading her account I had neither judged her poorly or greatly. I had just taken the story at face value, never considering the possibility that Dinah truly loved the Prince that was so brutally murdered. I certainly had not thought about the weight of shame that Dinah carried from that moment forward. The truth that is brought to her through Job is wonderful. One is invited to see first hand the healing power of God's forgiveness. One of my favorite parts is when Dinah is faced with a man who despises her and Job gently reminds her that no one can take away God's forgiveness only we can forfiet it. This book is laced with biblical truths that can quickly and easily be applied to anyones's life. After reading this fictional account you will never be able to read either story again with out deeply feeling each word and appreciating the plight of these two even more. Nor can one finish this book without having a deep understanding of God's restorative, healing and forgiving powers. In fact in more than one place the plan of salvation is presented. My hat is off to Mesu Andrews, I hope to read more of her books in the future.

Falling Through Ice, Carolyn Huebner Rankin with Rosetta D. Hoessli
This is a True Story about Carolyn Huebner Rankin founder of Texas Child Search Inc. This book is a dramatic story about the redemptive powers of Christ's love. I will say up front that there was profanity and graphic themes of abuse in this book. There for I would not recommend it to those with weak stomachs. In fact I found it very difficult to go to sleep the night I finished the book. Carolyn was a woman who had been deeply wounded and abused as a child. In an effort to deal with this abuse and her turbulent childhood she supressed these memories. However, in her adult life this came back to haunt her. The lesson learned is that in order to be free we must accept Christ and the forgiveness found with Him alone. Carolyn Huebner Rankin's book is one of a journey. She came from a bitter background, sustained a semi-normal life until pressures and memories brought her to a breaking point. At this time she became involved in a plot to have her own husband killed. I am glad that Ms. Huebner reveals in her book her responsiblity concerning her actions and is candid about her road to forgiving herself and those who harmed her. Though life is difficult and circumstances come against us that are beyond our control we each must take responsibility for our actions.

You are a Gift to the World/The World is a Gift to You, Laura Duksta
This flip-sided book is wonderful. The front side is titled "You are a Gift to the World" and tells about all the wonderful ways that children are a gift to this world. The other side reminds us how many wonderful gifts are given to us this world. This book is a beautiful reminder that the best gifts aren't bought, made, or pre-thought they are the very things that make life more precious. The most treasured gifts ought to be the things that we seem to take for granted most: laughter, song, smiles, trees, flowers, animals, waterfalls, clouds. Both books end the same way "You are a gift to the world and the world is a gift to you. So as you travel through life, you see all the ways it's true." Laura Duksta has done an impressive job with this children's book. What a wonderful way to let your child know how very special and unique they are!

My Name is not Alexander, Jennifer Fosberry
Wow! I loved this book as much as my children! My youngest son was fascinated by the pictures and the story of a little boy named Alexander. From waking in the morning till going to bed this little boy is constantly pretending to be someone else. After the second reading of this my little boy was reading it back. I really appreciated how the author included an biography page in the back describing each person that young Alexander was pretending to be. My son was asking who is Cheif Joseph, and Theodore....when we got to the end he loved the real life account of each person including birth and date of death. The book is full of imagination - and encourages children to take time to imagine what they will be when they grow up.

Preparig for Adolescence, James Dobson
This review is for the entire series called Preparing for Adolescence: The book, Family Guide, Group Guide and Family Cd's. Though each part of this can be used independently I recommend using it all together. The book is excellent, as are most of Dobson's parenting tools. This book addresses the concerns of this most turbulent age in childhood - that of becoming a young adult and leaving the time of being a child. I found it to be extremely helpful. The Family Guide is for use with your child and has many helpful ways to engage your child and keep communications open. The Group guide has further exercises and studies. I think the thing I liked most were the Cd's. The first one is for parents only - an overview of the study and encouragement for them as they navigate this time. The remaining Cd's are for the child. Though Dobson does not use alot of modern lingo his messages are direct, to the point, and honest. Each one is based on a subject that is of interest to the child. I thought it was excellent. I highly recommend it to parents. If nothing else it will help you to stay engaged with your child at a time when most children seem to be pulling away. The other benefit it that Dobson can address issues to your child that they may be reluctant to bring up with you or to embarrassed to ask about or afraid to admit that certain things are bothering them. This allows you to approach a subject without being nagging or nosy - they will feel their boundaries are still intact. Wonderful parenting resource!

Big Book of God's Amazing Creation
Home school parents if you are looking for a supplement to science curriculum this is it! If by chance you are using My Fathers World Kinder this would fit perfectly since it begins the year discussing creation. This book has 57 science projects for 3-5 and an equal amount for ages 6-12. The 7 of creation are divided in exploration, experimentation, and bible memory. There is something for everyone – this is an excellent opportunity for parents and children to explore God’s amazing creation – to come to a better appreciation of the beauty that is displayed. Megan Breedlove has created a book filled with fun and inspirational stories about motherhood. I appreciated how she incorporated scriptures and followed each story with questions for reflection. In this season of motherhood it is nice to know you are not the only one facing these situations. Moreover it is so refreshing to hear a woman share life experiences and recognizing God in each little thing. I had to giggle when I saw the cover art! How true to reality: wiped out on the sofa trying to read a good book with mass chaos of toys laying around. I remember those days of toddler-hood all too clearly.

First Place 4 Health
This is a great program. I have never felt that I was over-weight or battled with various diets or diet program. I chose to review this kit to see if it was beneficial to those who were trying to change their life-styles by eating healthy. Although, weight loss is a part of this program the main goal is a change of lifestyle not pant size. I have really enjoyed the scripture memorization because it has made me stop and think about things differently. I think one of the over-arching themes is to find satisfaction in Christ and contentment with Him. This being taught a person stops over-eating, eating for comfort, eating because of depression or what ever type of eating and begins seeing themselves as who they truly are - a temple of God and divinely created (and loved) by him. I think this will be a valuable tool for everyone seeking a healthier lifestyle.

She weaves into this book poignant, and beautiful stories intertwined with applicable scriptures. I think anyone would benefit from this book. Bathsheba, Jill Eileen Smith
This is book 3 in the Wives of David Series and is a keeper. I don't think I will ever look at the story of Bathsheba the same. I think when reading the scriptural account I have all too often not thought about the emotional implications of the acts perpetrated by David and Bathsheba or the extreme ramifications that occurred. For instance, I never considered how others thought of Bathsheba after Nathan confronted David with his sins in front of people. Nor have I ever given much thought as to what drove either of them to participate in the act of adultery. In this age adultery was punishable by stoning; I guess I never stopped to think of how Bathsheba would have been a "marked" woman deeply scorned and possibly shunned in the household of David and in society in general. It never occured to me that her safety might be in danger, as well as the safety of her children. This book is profoundly interesting. I read it in 2 days and found it difficult to put it down. I was deeply intrigued by the author's character development and the deep emotions that she brought to the story. This author did an excellent job on this book. Becoming a Woman of Influence, Carol Kent
What a refreshing and beautiful book. Carl Kent does an excellent job of presenting biblical ideals of christian life without being condescending. Her manner was humble and truthful making this study refreshing and encouraging. In a day when so many studies make a woman feel insignificant and unworthy this was a fresh look at timeless principles. I believe that Kent holds these very things close to her heart and tries to live them out. This would be an excellent study for a small group study or any women's ministry study. Each of us could use a dose of encouragement as we strive for a holy walk with the Lord. After reviewing this book I am very interested in her other books and studies.

The Artscroll English Tanach, The Jewish Bible
Wow what a resource! I have really enjoyed taking this bible out in comparison with my own. I enjoyed the different and more literal translation, although I will admit that sometimes it was a little shocking and at times it made me smile. The rabbinical teachings are wonderful. It most certainly opens up a new understanding of scripture and makes one more appreciative for the things God has given us in His word. I think this is an excellent resource for anyone that is interested in studying the Word. It brings about awareness of the Jewish culture and teachings that have been passed down for ages and generations that most modern Christians are unaware of. It will certainly challenge your thoughts on some scriptures while further strengthening your views of Christ. I did not find anything that was scripturally errant in this translation. In fact this reads much like a commentary bible.

Give Your Kids the Keys, Adam Stadtmiller
This is a very interesting book. I will say this is the first book published by Gospel Light that I can't just give rave reviews on. Although I agree with living radical faith, fully relying on God; I can't agree fully with all of Mr. Stadtmiller's opinions on how to accomplish this. His over-arching goal in this book, I believe, is to encourage parents to parent without fear. I do not agree however that parenting without fear means to throw off all caution or concern when it comes to raising our children under the anthem "God has not given us a spirit of fear". As for his beliefs that public school is the best mission field - I agree. However, I do not call home school families scared parents or overly protective. I can not say that "navigating" our children through watching Twighlight or other things in the name of preparing them to be in the world is the best approach. The bible clearly charges us to RUN from certain things. This word alone would give a person the impression that you are to avoid participating in these things are becoming familiar with them lest you too fall into 'diverse temptations'. I train my children to approach the things of this world with the discernment of the scripture holding tightly to the scriptures that admonish us to study, meditate and speak about the laws of the Lord that we can each be successful in all we do and what we do. In this way I believe my children will live out radical faith without being submersed in the profane lifestyles that are prevalent in today’s society.
Thank you Gospel Light for this review book. I am ever grateful for your endeavor to print good and wholesome material. Though I do not agree fully with this author I will not say that some of the things he presents are not worth considering in light of the scriptures.

This is a great book for all women and young ladies. In the introduction the author states that the book is more straight forward than anything that she has written in the past. As always this author's heart for young girls is evident in her pursuit to rightly divide the word of God. I believe this book would be good for any woman: married, single, dating. In reading it the student is immersed in the truth of what God intended sex to be all about. It systematically shatters the worlds theories of and misconceptions and replaces these with the solid truth of God's Word. Excellent book.

Great Commission Obedience, Jerry Rankin
This is a book compiled of transcribed messages preached at commissioning services for missionaries. I appreciate the fact that Jerry Rankin has put these into a book as I believe that they are each helpful in encouraging Christians in their individual mission walk each day. I think that Rankin meant this book for Pastors to be used as a resource and springboard for them to encourage their congregations. At any rate this is an easy book to read. The classical southern Baptist preaching style is evident in it. I would like to know if this author intends to just sell copies of these sermons at some time in the future. I find it easier to hear a sermon that to read it transcribed (even in the case of my own husband's sermon). It seems that sometimes the sheer emotion of the voice makes all the difference. Again this is a great book. Encourage your Pastor and lay people by getting them a copy.

From the Library of A.W. Tozer, James Stuart Bell
WOW! This is a must have for A.W. Tozer fans or fans of classical christian writing. This book is composed of writings that inspired the great A.W. Tozer. I, myself, am a huge fan of Tozer. He is by far one of the greatest teachers of biblical wisdom that has lived. His works have inspired countless Christians in their walk with Christ. Now, in this book, the reader is invited into a deeper understanding of A.W. Tozer by reading from excerpts from godly men and women that inspired Tozer. This book opens with a short biography of A.W. Tozer then goes into the many men and women that inspired him. These are divided into sections of topics. The book is an excellent resource for classical christian literature and study. It would make an wonderful gift for a Pastor or Seminary student. I greatly enjoyed reading it and will be using it in our home school.

Handle with Prayer, Charles Stanley

Another beautifully well-written book by Charles Stanley. This is an updated version of a previously released book. I believe that he is one the best preachers and authors on biblical matter of this era. His heart and devotion for the things of God is so evident in his writing. In this book he encourages believers in the endeavors of prayer. Teaching them how to pray with authority, receive the answers to prayers (even when these are not the expected, anticipated or desired results), how to pray God's will (using very in depth scripture reference), How to pray for others according to scripture and why it seems that prayers sometimes go unanswered. I really appreciate the new study guide included in this version of the book. This offers additional helps and opens this up to be used in a group study setting. As always Charles Stanley has an easy manner in expounding the scriptures so that it is easily applicable to everyone who reads it. This is a must have addition to your library on prayer!

The Titus Mandate, Ted Bigelow

This book reads like a doctorate thesis. It is almost as if the author has chosen a subject matter to defend and explain. In spite of this the book is very well written. I am curious to know if he is using "elders" and "deacons" interchangably since there is signifigant biblical proof that these two are very different areas of service. I will say that Ted Bigelow presents compelling and concise evidence of the need for church reformation and change - a total make-over. I agree with his assesments of the church of today and the need for a closer look at the Titus Mandate. I would highly recommend this for church leaders and teachers for review. If you are looking for a great review and study of Titus this is it! Your view of the church will be changed and hopefully this will encourage each reader to do his/her part in the rescue, protection and restoration of the church and its leaders.

Truth about Dating, Love & Just Being Friends, Chad Eastham
I didn't really know what to expect from this book. I wanted to review it since I have 4 children that will some day be teens and since I work with the youth group at our church. I found it to be really very humorous. Chad Eastham does an excellent job at connecting with youth on their level, sometimes even at his own expense. His warm and friendly personality is evident in his writing style. It is very evident that he is concerned with the trials and temptations that youth face today. In their language this author addresses concerns of this generation in terms they can understand and appreciate. Though there is nothing new under the sun (according to scripture) it is without dispute that our children are facing temptations at earlier ages to stray from God’s word. This is an excellent resource for parents and those who work with teens. It would be a great book for you and your teen to read together and discuss. This way they also understand that you want to help them during the tumultuous teen years. Together you can navigate their concerns by reading what scripture says about these topics. I am not disappointed in this book at all and hope to see more from this author.

I really appreciate the fact that this is a stand alone devotional. You do not have to read the book Sacred Parenting to appreciate and use it. Gary Thomas gathered new material that further expands on the lessons taught in the bible study and book. Much like Devotions for a Sacred Marriage it has 52 devotions - one for each week of the year. The purpose is for couples to study this devotional one night out of the week and other devotionals the rest of the week. In this way the material studied can be prayed about and put into practice for one week before moving on to the next subject. For couples just starting to have a devotional time together this is a great way to start. Often one night a week is easier than five nights. I would encourage couples to pick up other devotionals or bible studies for the remaining nights.
